What's new in ToolBook II 8.1 SP1?

The following is a list of new and enhanced features available in Service Pack 1 (SP1) for ToolBook Instructor 8.1 and ToolBook Assistant 8.1:

ToolBook II 8.1 SP1 provides technology to assist in the authoring of accessible, DHTML-deployed, e-learning content.  The accessibility authoring components and functionality include a new catalog, a new template, and changes to the book specialist and DHTML export wizard.

Note: Accessibility/Accessible refers to making online information easy to obtain for people with various levels of eyesight, hearing capacity, and motor skills.

The new accessibility catalog provides a selection of extended objects that work with screen reading technologies such as the Freedom Scientific Jaws(R) for Windows(R) screen reader. Navigation buttons and answers in question objects support tabbing and tab order to make every element accessible via keyboard-only interactions.

The new accessibility template and book specialist style provide two possible starting points for creating accessible e-learning content.  Build books with pages and background from these tools, and objects from the accessibility catalog, to assure that the DHTML-exported book will be accessible.

The export wizard has two new settings for making DHTML exports accessible.  The first setting creates AltText tags from tool tip text for graphical objects.  The text in AltText tags are used by HTML screen readers to describe verbally what the graphic is.  The second setting assures that the technology needed to use Freedom Scientific's Jaws(R) for Windows(R) screen reader with ToolBook DHTML content is included as part of the export.

ToolBook 8.1 SP1 DHTML-exported content is now SCORM 1.2 compliant. This allows DHTML exported content to work with any learning management system that is also SCORM 1.2 compliant. More specifically, SP1 will allow ToolBook DHTML content to work with the upcoming Aspen LMS 1.1's SCORM 1.2 implementation.

Several major bug fixes including:

  • Fix for the sporadic problem of some graphics not rendering when navigating DHTML-exported books.
  • Fix for the problem where HTTP posting and AICC scoring would fail in Native/Neuron deployed books on Windows 95, 98 and ME machines.
  • Fix for the "36 (or 38) Object doesn't support this property or method" error when trying to launch a DHTML-exported application.
  • Fix for problem with AICC scoring in DHTML from secured servers.
