PROBLEM/SYMPTOM
Despite uninstalling and reinstalling ToolBook (perhaps several times), an undesirable error message or crashing behavior is still occurring on one machine, but not on any others. Even rebooting the machine does not remedy the problem.
RESOLUTION
Before re-installing a version of ToolBook it is important to make sure any previous install of the same version of ToolBook is completely removed. This article explains how to do this.
Since it's possible to have multiple versions of ToolBook installed on your system this doesn't mean you have to uninstall all versions of ToolBook, but only the one you are wanting to re-install.
There is one possible hazard though. If you re-install a version of ToolBook on a system that already has a newer version installed, the ToolBook Loader Mechanism may have problems opening books created in that newer version.
For example if your system has TB 8.6 and TB 9.0 on it, and you uninstall 8.6 and reinstall it, you may get a "Not a valid ToolBook header" error when double-clicking on TB 9.0 books. Reinstalling TB 9.0 will clear up the error.
STEP 1
Run the Uninstaller for ToolBook as found in the Add\Remove Programs control panel.
STEP 2
Using Windows Explorer, locate the main Product folder where ToolBook was installed. For example:
ToolBook 2004
c:\program files\sumtotal\instructor 2004\ToolBook 9.0
c:\program files\toolbook\instructor 9\This folder is still remaining even after an uninstall because there are some files in this folder that may have personal setting in them (such as objects added to the catalog). For this reason ToolBook Uninstaller leaves some stuff behind.
You will want to DELETE this folder if performing a Clean Reinstall. If you happened to store any of your project files in this folder, please move them to another folder prior to deleting the folder. If you happened to have added some objects to the Catalog and wish to keep them, you will need to move a copy of the CATALOG folder elsewhere until after the install is finished.
STEP 3
Locate and DELETE the TBSYSTEM folder, typically located at:
ToolBook 8.x
c:\program files\common files\click2learn\tbsystem\ToolBook 9.x
c:\program files\common files\toolbook\tbsystem\WARNING:
This TBSYSTEM folder contains the runtime engine files for any version of ToolBook 8.0 - 8.9. This means if you delete this entire folder you will disabling all versions of ToolBook 8.x on your system, including ToolBook 8.9 (otherwise known as ToolBook 2004) requiring you to have to reinstall those versions in order to get them functional again.
STEP 4
Reinstall ToolBook normally.
