What's new in ToolBook II Instructor 8.0?

The following is a list of new and enhanced features available in ToolBook II Instructor 8.0:

e-Learning Network (eLN) site - ToolBook II Instructor 8.0 comes with an eLN site that can host up to 100 users. This site is provided at no charge for one year after product or upgrade purchase. ToolBook developers can use this site to share their content with other registered users, track user progress through the course, and produce learning management reports.

Expanded Support for Learning Standards - DHTML deployment now supports both the AICC HTTP protocol and the SCORM 1 (AICC API) protocol. Neuron deployment now supports the AICC HTTP protocol.

Improvements to DHTML Deployment - Version 8.0 has several new features that will assist developers with creating, exporting and running DHTML-deployed Instructor applications:

  • When first starting up a new ToolBook course, authors have the option of
choosing either a Native/Neuron deployment or a DHTML deployment method.
Once a method has been selected, Instructor's user interface adjusts
dynamically to only give access to functionality that works correctly in
    the chosen deployment.
  • The DHTML export process has been optimized to decrease overall export
time, and now allows a ToolBook developer to export a range of pages, or
only pages that have been changed since the last export.
  • The 'Loading Page' message can be changed to different text and a bitmap
graphic can be inserted to give on-line courses a more customized look.
  • Tab order works in DHTML deployment for non-graphic buttons and text
    fields.
  • Using the Full Book Specialist, the ability to create randomized quizzes
for DHTML deployment is available. A quiz can consist of a randomized
number of questions, or a randomized subset of a pool of questions.

Event Actions (EA) System Improvements - The EA System has several new enhancements and features:

  • New interface features a drag-and-drop environment. This
makes the creation of action sequences faster and easier.
  • In-place editing allows Instructor developers to click on words and
expressions in an action statement, and edit the line immediately.
  • Keyboard events can now be captured using the new Key Press, Key Up and
    Key Down events.
  • Instructor can communicate with any server-side script (CGI, ASP,
JSP, SSJS) using the Set HTTP Post Parameter action, the HTTP Post
action, and the getParmeter and httpPost functions.
  • EA variables can now be defined as one-dimension arrays. Array indexes
can be numbers or text strings
  • The Set Layer action provides an easier way to set the layer of an
object relative to other objects on the page

New Catalog Interface - The catalog has been optimized to run faster. The new dockable user interface makes adding catalog objects to Instructor courses much simpler. Icons representing catalog objects are now in 16-bit color and the entire interface is customizable to show the entire catalog, or just a subset of favorite objects.

Multiple bug fixes and feature enhancements for the AutoPackager including:

  • ASU file size limitation of 64K removed for AutoPackager and InstallShield.
  • Media files for Universal Media Player, Real Player, and Windows Media Player objects are now detected during AutoPackaging.
  • Ability to create icons/shortcuts on the desktop has been added.
  • Ability to create CD-ROM autorun installations has been added

Authoring Tools - Several authoring tools have been added to Instructor including:

  • Question Checklist Tool
  • Convert Object Tool
  • Array Editor
  • Size Background Tool
  • Find Object Tool

New Ask and Request Boxes - OpenScript ASYM_Ask() and ASYM_Request() functions allow for more features such as icon selection, customizable response buttons and the ability to use Rich Text Format (RTF).

Open, Save, and Save As dialog boxes have been updated to 32-bit versions with the standard features such as directory creation, file renaming and deleting, and access to the desktop.
